Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak today officially launched the much anticipated Proton Exora, Malayia’s first home-grown multi purpose vehicle or MPV.

Unveiling the new MPV with the Prime Minister were PROTON Holdings Berhad Chairman Datuk Mohd. Nadzmi Mohd Salleh and Managing Director Dato’ Haji Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohammed Tahir. Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammed, the person instrumental in launching the national car project in 1983, was also present with Tun Siti Hasmah Mohamed Ali to witness the launch.

The launch was attended by several Cabinet Ministers and Deputy Ministersm foreign dignitaries and other distinguished guests.

The launch today marked a milestone not only for PROTON but for the country as well as the Exora is Malaysia’s first locally produced MPV encompassing almost 90% of local parts and components. The Exora is also the first wholly “Malaysian-made” MPV from design and concept to engineering and manfacturing by PROTON.

The Exora emphasises on three main feature elements - comfort, performance and safety, which were translated into the design and quality of the vehicle. PROTON Holdings Berhad Chairman Dato’ Mohd. Nadzmi bin Mohd. Salleh described the Exora as PROTON’s answer to the needs and requirments of PROTON customers who are now more discerning.

“PROTON is now venturing into the MPV segment which has grown in popularity. The Exora will be our answer for the customers out there who are now more concious about comfort and safety of their family members while travelling. It is designed, engineered and manufactures based on researches and market studies made by PROTON over the years” said Dato’ Nadzmi.

Dato’ Mohd. Nadzmi added that the introduction of the Exora indicated the advancement of the Malaysian automotive technology as it is locally produced from ground up, from the initial R&D activities right through to the design and production processes. “Being one of the pioneering team members who helped set up PROTON 25 years ago, I am indeed very proud of the achievements made by the PROTON family who have turned a vision into a reality,” he added.

“I am certain that PROTON will not stop here, but will continue to improve and increase its efforts to ensure it remains relevant and able to compete with other established global car makers,” said Dato’ Mohd. Nadzmi.

Meanwhile, Proton Holdings Berhad Managing Director Dato’ Haji Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said the Exora was an engineering feat for PROTON as it was developed in merely 18 months from the time PROTON fixed the design (model-fix) to production stage. “This feat has gained us much respect from our peers in the automotive industry, ” he said.

“It indicates our success in not only producing cars but also in developing a pool of capable and experienced engineers and skilled workers in the Malaysian automotive industry. We have proven that the impossible is now possible with hard work and determination.

“The Exora meets our aspiration to producethe right car at the right time and at the right price. Malaysians have already warmed up to the Exora ever since the booking for the MPV was opened on 21st February, 2009. So far, we have received more than 2,500 bookings and this is a very encouraging development for us. the level of trust given by our customers towards the MPV is heartening.” said Dato’ Syed Zainal.

“Dont take our word for it. Please do come over to any of the 293 Proton Edar and EON sales offices nationwide to see and experience the Exora yourself, ” added Dato’ Syed Zainal.

The night also saw the first four Exora owners receiving their keys from the Prime Minister and driving home in their in their brand new Exoras. The Exora owners were three early bird customers, Syed Mohd Lufti bin Syed Hamzah, Ramamuthie a/l Varathan and Teng Kim Hong and winner of the MPV Naming Contest, Norsholihan binti Abd Eanich.

The Exora features the 1.6 CamPro CPS engine with 4-speed automatic transmission and is available in two variants, Medium-Line at RM69,998 (OTR) and High-Line at RM75,998 (OTR), with 2 airbags as standard. The Exora is available in six colours - Pyrite Brown, Gaia Blue, Genetic Silver, Tranquility Black, Blue Haze and Solid White.

The Engine - 300 hp, 3-litre V6 APX is a front engined and four wheel drive "Crossover" vehicle for occasional off road use. The V6 engine has been designed and developed by Lotus Engineering's powertrain division. The directive for the project was to produce a high performance prototype engine without the need to resort to exotic materials or manufacturing technology, allowing manufacture around the world.The supercharged V6 is part of a family of normally aspirated and supercharged high performance engines which includes 2.2 litre and 3.0 litre normally aspirated derivatives. All of these engines are at the prototype stage and are production feasible, but are not currently planned for production.The engine is production feasible and it is expected that the commercialisation of this engine will be of interest to the automotive clients of Lotus Engineering. APX's engine is a supercharged 3 litre (2996 cc, Bore: 88 mm, stroke: 82.1 mm) V6 DOHC engine, mounted longitudinally in the front of the vehicle. It uses a Rootes-type supercharger with a compact air - to - water Laminova - type charge cooler with separate parallel coolant system using its own water pump and heat exchangers allowing a charge temperature reduction of approximately 50 degrees Celcius. Performance of the engine is maximum power of 224 kW (300 hp, 304 PS) at 6250 rpm and a torque of 360 Nm at 4500 rpm. 80% of peak torque is between 1500 rpm and maximum revs of 6500 rpm. Like all products from Lotus, it follows the adage of "performance through light weight", in that the engine weighs just 171 kg (fully dressed, dry weight). This gives a phenomenal specific output of around 1.31 kW/kg (1.7 hp/kg). Specific performance is 74.6 kW / litre (100 hp / litre, 101.3 PS / litre).This light weight comes from using cast lightweight aluminium alloy cylinder block (with thin wall iron liners), aluminium cylinder head, and an aluminium structural oilpan, able to support the front drive shafts. The oilpan also includes coolant and lubrication channels to the oil cooler and filter, and an electronic oil level and temperature sensor. Even the pistons are lightweight - with each on weighing just 454 grams! The construction of the V6 engine is arranged around the two banks of cylinders at an angle of 75 degrees with a compact cylinder offset of just 32.5 mm. This allows the engine to be compact, with good vibration characteristics, eliminating any requirement for balance shafts and the related extra cost, weight, height and complexity. The Engine Management System uses a state of the art 32 bit ECU processor capable of over 200 million calculations per second. The ECU is Euro IV / E-OBD and LEV/OBDII compliant. And of course the engine satisfies the European End of Life Requirements (ELV) with respect to recyclability and recovery. The V6 engine is an example of extensive research into "engine downsizing by Lotus Engineering's Powertrain Team. Engine downsizing is the concept of using advanced technologies to enable a small engine to produce the power and torque of a much larger engine, with the obvious reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. One of the key demands of the automotive industry is to produce engines with not only low emissions and high fuel economy but also extremely good performance. These two demands for performance and economy are not normally compatible unless there is a significant change in the engine development strategy. Like the vehicle, the engine is not just a Lotus Engineering concept, but a feasible prototype close to production, however it is not a concept indicating a strategic powertrain direction of Lotus Cars. The engine is production feasible and it is expected that the commercialization of this engine will be of interest to the automotive clients of Lotus Engineering.

MEM was originally formed in 1982 as an outlet for its owner, Chris Mellors, to compete in British Champion Rallying but soon developed into a successful preparation company winning events and more than 10 championships all over the world since it was formed in 1983. Highlights include MEM winning the British Championship twice, the FIA Production World Championship with the Proton Wira in 2002, the US Pro-Rally Championship in 2003 for Mitsubishi USA and the 2004 FIA Asia-Pacific Championship, again for Proton. Building on this successful partnership between MEM and Proton in Malaysia, MEM was authorised to transform the road going version of Protons Satria Neo model and produce a ground-breaking conversion of the Satria into the full specification Super 2000 car that you see today.

The Car

Designed by Mellors Elliott Motorsport, (MEM), the new Proton Satria Neo Super 2000 rally car has just raised the performance bar for the rapidly expanding FIA Super 2000 rally series.

The concept was developed by using a combination of innovative engineering designs, the 25 years of experience of the teams technical staff but, crucially, also the input from the teams owner and extremely successful driver, Chris Mellors. The result is an astonishingly small and agile car which from the very outset was designed for the driver.

With an attractive and aerodynamic package for the front bumper, wings, rear bumper and rear spoiler complimenting the eye-catching Satria design, the Proton S2000 can achieve in full rally trim the smallest frontal area and the lowest roof height in its class even at rally ride height settings. Driver and Co-driver seat positions are fixed at the rearmost possible mounting points to maximise the cars weight distribution but with the pedal box and steering column both adjustable to suit different pilots. The MEM rollcage design uses 35 metres of lightweight Chrome Moly tube together with strategic body strengthening resulting in vastly improved torsional bodyshell stiffness and a no-compromise safety cell for the crew. The cleverly designed side crash protection bars are uniquely shaped to aid driver and co-driver access into and out of the car.

The 2 litre Proton Super 2000 engine is derived from the 1.8 litre engine fitted to Protons Waja model and has been further developed by MEMs engineers to produce a reliable 278 bhp @ 7600rpm with a usable power band from 5,500 to 8,500rpm. Combined with the best 6-speed sequential 4WD Super 2000 transmission currently available, (the 532 version from market leaders Xtrac), the car sets new standards for engine performance and driveability.

The fuel system innovates too with a quick-change fuel control cassette, (which includes all the fuel pumps, filters and valves), attached to the MEM-designed FIA FT3 safety fuel cell to aid rapid maintenance.

Alcon provides the braking power with their latest Super 2000 alloy 4-pot calipers and ventilated discs which combined with the Neos low overall weight of 1150kg gives astoundingly short braking distances. The ventilated disc sizes are independently maximised for both Gravel, (15 rims), and Tarmac, (18 rims), but for both simplicity and cost the brake calipers are common to both setups thanks to a simple mounting arrangement.

MEMs engineers have designed the suspension with a relatively conventional layout of wishbone and MacPherson strut, which means it will be easy and relatively cheap to maintain whilst remaining super-reliable. However, the design has cleverly maximised damper travel to such an extent that the bump stops are the only part that stops the body sills hitting the ground on full bump travel! This translates into achieving both an ultra-low tarmac setup with go-kart levels of body roll and a long-travel gravel setup with enormous ability to soak up the biggest bumps. With various anti-roll bars available for both front and rear and with MEMs 25 years of rally experience, the suspension setup can be easily fine-tuned for any rally surface or type.

The latest technology is used in the electrical systems with a state-of-the-art Multiplexed wiring system capable of managing the entire cars electronics from a central unit ideally placed in the centre of the car in-between the driver and co-driver. Apart from the weight saving reduction that this achieves, it is simple to operate and, with automatically resetting circuit breakers, this is technology and reliability at its best.

The result of all this is a car which not only has well-proven technical advances and novel design but also has simplicity where appropriate to ensure the best possible combination of performance and reliability.

Proton in talks with Petter Solberg for 2010 WRC debut with Proton Satria Neo

Will Proton make a debut in the World Rally Championship for the 2010 season? Apparently this is a possibility, and Proton is actually working at making this happen, according to Proton director Datuk Haji Abdul Razak Dawood. He says a successful WRC program could establish Proton’s brand and reputation in Europe the same way it helped Subaru in the 90s.

According to Datuk Haji, a Proton Satria Neo in the WRC could possibly turn it into a cult car with a following like what Subaru enjoyed with the WRX. If the proposed WRC regulation revisions to a “S2000+ spec” becomes official, it would allow Proton to compete in the WRC with a much smaller budget and compete against the big boys like Ford and Citroen. All that needs to be done is to upgrade the existing MEM Satria Neo S2000 (shown above) to whatever the S2000+ spec is.

2003 World Champion Petter Solberg is said to be in talks with Proton for a 2010 season. He will be testing the MEM Satria Neo S2000 car sometime in February, and according to him the Proton is a nice and detailed car. He says he has met with Proton but nothing about the proposed 2010 season has been finalised yet. There is also word about Solberg racing in a Citroen C4 instead, but he says that deal has not been finalised yet either.

The demands of average drivers compared to those who are more serious are expectedly different. At a pure business standpoint, volume will always take precedence over niche demands to rake in the profits, if not for statistical benefits. Comparisons of Proton's Savvy to Perodua's Myvi have been going on for quite a while with each camp throwing their points on the table. Debate is still on though at a lesser degree and i still can't believe people are wasting time with the issue. Of course the Savvy wins hands down!

In one of my correspondences with a Hypertune reader, he described the other car “is for aunties” and he was right. What's not to love about Savvy's brilliant handling? The engine might be a little too lightweight for most drivers liking but that's what the rigid chassis is for, max out the engine speed and take a corner like a roadrunner possessed. The Campro engine just makes the sure the driver won't too easily overpower the car itself, sort of like a built-in safety mechanism.

Unfortunately, the same Campro engine, or any Campro engine for that matter is practically impossible to tune. Average Sunway tuners might be interested to try but they are probably too busy fixing bolt-ons and finding more space to store their carbon fiber. So i guess it all depends on R3 then, which in a way prompted for a feature on this ride.

Not to say that its' powerplant has been tinkered with but also bear in mind that the motorsports division is known to keep a tight-lip on their R&D efforts, especially when the public is not asking. In an interview i had with them published some issues back, they are indeed looking at ways to wring more performance from the Neo. Let's not forget about their Gen.2s in rally and track cars too.

This car actually belongs to R3's media manager, Amin and does prove a point that it does not take much to turn the standard Savvy to a groovy Savvy. Their in-house bodykit is an instant and effective method in bringing out the true character of the car. The Zerokit body appendages makes the profile lower while at the same time accentuates the flared wheel arches tellingly. What i love most about it is the front part with a forward pointing lower lip that gives the 'plouging ahead' term a whole new meaning. A Zerokitted Savvy should really be featured in the coming 'Transformers' movie but probably my suggestion to the production house came in a little too late.

This should mean a total 12bhp increase over the stock Campro 1.6, which brings it up to 122bhp, but R3 has rated the GEN.2 MME at 118bhp.

The car also comes with a new set of 7-spoke wheels with 16 inch size, and these are wrapped with grilly Continental SportContact-1 tyres, similiar to the ones found on the Proton Satria Neo 1.6 liter. Peer into the space behind the wheel spokes and you will find the car has been fitted with R3 Performance Slotted Brake Discs.

As for handling, GEN.2 MME also comes with a performance spring kit, lowering the car by 25mm on average. There is also a front strut bar made from aluminium, helping with suspension strut deflection. Other than the strut bar and the spark plugs, the other addition to the engine bay is purely aesthetic - an alloy CamPro engine cover that comes finished in red.

Interior aesthetics are enhanced with a red R3 gearknob and R3 floor mats. The sound system comes with Bluetooth and iPod support. If you’re thinking you don’t need iPod support because you don’t have an iPod, you’ll be delighted to find the car also comes with an iPod Nano 1GB ready to be connected to the car audio system.

Proton managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin told the Oman Economic Review that Proton was developing a turbocharged engine set for introduction by the years 2010 to 2011, just in time for a facelift of the 2009 Proton MPV which could see the introduction of this turbocharged engine.

The turbocharged engine would be in line with the current market trends of having a small displacement engine but forced inducted to produce the equivalent horsepower of a larger motor, usually with more torque, and more fuel efficiency. The engine will have the power output equivalent to a 2.0 liter engine. We could be looking at a 1.6 liter Campro turbo or Campro CPS turbo engine producing about 150 horsepower and perhaps 240Nm of torque.

Proton is also set to spend RM5 billion over the next 5 years on R&D efforts, which is about RM1 billion a year. Other efforts (as quoted in the report) include developing a small competitive car, acquiring diesel engines licensed from an international OEM (Fiat? Peugeot?) because of their popularity in markets such as India, hybrid and electric technologies, the possibility of a joint model with Lotus (spiritual successor to the Lotus Carlton based on a Proton maybe?), and the reduction of weight of Proton models.

2008 New Proton Gen2 CPS & IAFM!!

As many readers will already know, an upgraded version of the Proton Gen2 with a more powerful engine has been produced at the Tanjung Malim plant for some months now. However, Malaysian customers have not been able to buy this version because the first market it was introduced to was Thailand. The move to launch a new model outside Malaysia was explained by Proton MD, Dato' Haji Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir, as being a 'strategic move' which was intended to demonstrate Proton's seriousness in growing its export markets, especially so in Thailand.

"Besides using the Bangkok Motorshow for the world premiere of our new Gen2, we also wanted to show our future customers in Thailand that we are serious about selling our cars in their market. The Thai market is an important one for Proton and it is a competitive one so we wanted to have a strong product to kick off our entry," he told MTM.

From Wednesday (March 5th) , Malaysians get the same new model which is available in two equipment levels with two different variants of the Campro engine. Both engine variants are 1.6 litres but feature additional hardware which addresses the awful torque curve that gave Proton's engine family a bad name when the Gen2 was originally launched, as well as boosts power output.

The Gen2 M-Line gets the Campro with the Intake Air-Flow Module (IAFM) which is also used in the New Saga's 1.3-litre engine. The IAFM does nothing to boost output but because it varies the airflow at lower speeds, it has eliminated the dip in the torque curve and made torque generation more linear. Factory tests show that acceleration is marginally improved while fuel consumption is pretty much the same as the previous engine without IAFM. Driveability should, however, be significantly different and drivers won't have to wait till 4000 rpm for some decent acceleration.

The Gen2 H-Line (available from March 25th) , which costs RM4,000 over M-Line, gets the real Campro engine, ie with the long-awaited Cam Profile Switching (CPS) mechanism. For those who are not familiar with CPS, it is a mechanism which allows the valve timing to be altered so that there can be strong performance at both ends of the rpm range; with conventional designs, engineers have usually had to make a choice between high performance at high rpm and sacrifice low rpm driveability or vice-versa. CPS, like the variable valve timing systems of Toyota and Honda, makes it possible to have 'the best of both worlds'. However, compared to the systems in the Japanese models, Proton's CPS (which was developed and patented by Lotus Engineering, a subsidiary of Proton) is a simpler mechanism without infinite variability making it cheaper to produce.

This engine, designated Campro CPS, also has a variable intake manifold (VIM) which works like IAFM but is more sophisticated in that it also interfaces with the Engine Control Unit (ECU), thereby having more precise operation.

The addition of these two pieces of hardware - which is actually what the Campro design was originally meant to be - boosts power by 13.4% to 93 kW (125 bhp) from 82 kW(110 bhp) and adds 2 Nm of torque to make it 150 Nm at a peak of 4500 rpm. At last, the muscular character is now available at the low end and given that the first Campro was impressive at the top end, if the same characteristics are now found at the low end, this will be a very powerful engine for its class.

The extra output improves acceleration though not to the 8 seconds that some clown in the forum said it would be. Proton's claims for the 0 to 100 km/h sprint are 10.6 seconds with the manual transmission and 13.2 seconds with the automatic transmission. The fuel consumption appears to be marginally higher, perhaps underlining the fact that 'you can't have your cake and eat it'; in other words, more power does mean more fuel needed. The top speed is 190 km/h for the manual and 185 km/h for the automatic… strangely, these are the same numbers for the Campro IAFM without CPS.

There are supposed to be some changes to the gear ratios but the specific changes could not be obtained at the time of writing.

With the new engines under the bonnet, Proton can now reposition the Gen2 as a sporty model - and the performance now justifies it. Dato' Syed Zainal Abidin said that the Gen2 was never really the Wira Replacement Model (WRM) that it has been made out to be earlier as the real WRM was the Persona.

Externally, there are cosmetic changes which freshen the looks of the Gen2. The front grille is larger and the headlights now have black bezels while a rear spoiler is standard. For the H-Line, there is additional skirting to give a more low-slung look. Both new versions also get alloy rims with new designs.

Inside, the quality of materials has been improved and the door handle has been redesigned. Leather upholstery is standard for the H-Line.

The other features of the new Gen2 are as before with 4-wheel disc brakes and 15-inch wheels (195/55 tyres) as standard. Proton is still not offering dual airbags across the range and the M-Line has only one airbag. Likewise, ABS + EBD are only available with the H-Line along with cruise control.

Acknowledging that the earlier Gen2 did have quality issues (it has been rare for a Proton CEO to admit that Proton products have faults), Dato' Syed Zainal gave assurances that all the feedback was thoroughly reviewed and many areas have been improved, including the infamous power window system. He is confident that the latest Gen2 will not draw the same sort of complaints that plagued the original one.

Second Genaration Campro

The Campro IAFM (Integrated Air-Fuel Module) is essentially a basic DOHC Campro engine equipped with a variable-length intake manifold, developed under a joint fast track programme which began in April 2005 by EPMB, Bosch and Proton. However, the IAFM differs from the VIM (Variable Inlet Manifold) for the Campro CPS engine in terms as follows:

The IAFM is a stand-alone module that can be fitted with a basic DOHC Campro engine whereas the VIM needs to work in conjunction with the CPS system in a Campro CPS engine.
The IAFM is operated by the engine vacuum while the VIM uses an ECU-controlled solenoid.

The Integrated Air-Fuel Module for the Proton Campro engine debuted in the second-generation Proton Saga, which was launched on 18 January 2008. We first heard of it back in October 2006 where it was still in advanced tooling stages, and ever since then everyone has been eagerly awaiting for the first Campros to roll out with the new air fuel module.

With the IAFM, the 1.3L engine used in the Proton Saga now produces 98 bhp (73 kW) @ 6,500 rpm. The maximum torque is slightly reduced to 113.2 N·m (83.5 ft·lbf); however, the engine has broader torque range and the noticeable torque dip in the basic DOHC Campro engine has been eliminated. However, the official brochure is only published with the familiar 94 bhp (70 kW) @ 6,000 rpm power and 120 N-m @ 4,000 rpm torque for consistency with other 1.3L Proton models.

Meanwhile, the output of the 1.6L version of the IAFM engine which debuted in the 2008 Proton Gen-2 M-Line produces 110 bhp (82 kW) @ 6,500 rpm of horsepower and 148 N·m (109 ft·lbf) of torque, and the torque dip around 2,500-3,500 rpm has been eliminated.

The basic Campro engine coded as S4PH is a basic DOCH 16-valve 1.6 L engine that produces 110 bhp (82 kW) @ 6,000 rpm of horsepower and 148 N·m (109 ft·lbf) of torque. This is the engine that powers the Proton Gen-2. The S4PH engine can be fitted with Cam Profile Switching (CPS) and Variable Inlet Manifold (VIM) technology. Besides this 1.6 Litre engine, Proton has produced the 1.3 Litre version of the Campro engine.

Even though the S4PH engine seems to be quite powerful at higher revs, its performance is reportedly sluggish at lower revs and this is proven by driving the Gen-2 uphill where drivers who drive the manual transmission version have to shift a lot between 2nd gear and 3rd gear. This is due to its torque dip in the crucial 2,000 ~ 3,000 rpm operating range, where the torque actually decreases before picking up back to the maximum torque at 4,000 rpm. This torque characteristic can be clearly seen in manufacturer published engine performance curves.

Another engine option for the basic DOHC engine is a 1.3L engine coded as S4PE. The S4PE engine produces 94 bhp (70 kW) @ 6,000 rpm and the torque of 120 N·m (89 ft·lbf) @ 4,000 rpm, which is more powerful than the other 1.3L rivals, even with variable valve timing technology, it also suffers this omission (like its bigger brother) by displaying a torque dip at typical engine 2,000 to 3,000 rpm speeds.
